春を感じに日帰りドライブへ

一面オレンジのポピーが咲き乱れる国立公園へ

例年に無くここ最近ずっ～と曇りか雨で日が差さない寒い日が続いいたロサンゼルスにもやっと日差し溢れる

カリフォルニアらしい晴天続きの季節がやって来ました。

 

今の時期に咲き出す鮮やかなオレンジ色のポピーが見られる国立公園があるというので先日ドライブへ。

 

毎年咲き始める時期が異なりますが今年は３月中旬から開花し始めるっというので満開とまでは行きませんで

したが鮮やかなポピーの鑑賞を楽しんで来たのでご紹介したいと思います。

 

その名はモハーベ砂漠（Mojave Desert)に位置する アンテロープ・バレー国立公園

（Antelope Valley California States Park）の中にあるポピー保護区（Poppy Reserve)です。

 

カリフォルニア州の花、アンテロープ・カリフォルニアポピー保護区。

 

場所はというとロサンゼルス市内から車で約１時間半、距離にして１１０キロ弱の所にあります。

（下記のAntelope Valley・・・の名前の所がその場所です。）

実はポピーは１９０３年にカリフォルニアの州の花として認定されてるんです。

 

この保護区に訪れる迄全く知りませんでした。

 

以前はカリフォルニア州全域にポピーの平原がそこかしこにあったのが土地の開発や水不足等環境の変化で

どんどん減って行き今ではこのアンテロープ・バレーでしか見る事が出来ません。

 

鮮やかなオレンジ色のポピー。

 

このポピー保護区は給水やその他の手段つまり人の手を一切入れずに自然の形でポーピーを保護している場所です。

 

トレイルの道が幾つもあり、終日花を見ながらトレッキングも楽しめる場所になっています。

 

幾つものトレイルが。

 

広大なトレイル。こういう風景を見るとアメリカって大きいなと感じます。

 

ポピー保護区の始まり 

このポピー保護区は１９７６年に保護区として指定されました。

 

その保護に尽力したのが１９４０年にこの地に夫婦で移住したジェーン・シーモア・ピンハイロ

（Jane Seymour Pinheiro)という女性。

 

 

彼女はこのアンテロープの砂漠に咲く植物に魅せられ、そのれらのスケッチを独学で描き始めました。

 

そのスケッチが非常に正確であった為、植物の鑑定に使われたそうです。

 

ジェーン・ピンハイロが描いたポピー。

 

そんな彼女は自費でこの砂漠に毎年咲く鮮やかなポピーの花や自然溢れるこの場所を保護する為に様々な活動を行い、

やがて自然保護活動者として名が知られる様に。

 

そんな彼女の活動に敬意を表してこの保護区内に設立された情報センターはジェーン・シーモア・ピンハイロ情報センター

（Jane Seymore Pinheiro Interpretive Center) と彼女の名前が付けられています。

情報センター内ではボランティアの人達がポピーの詳しい説明をしてくれます。

 

気候に左右される繊細な花、ポピー 

さてこの鮮やかなオレンジ色に咲き乱れるポピーは意外にも天候特に雨の量に左右される繊細な花だという事を

ご存知でしょうか。

 

一回の雨嵐によってもたらせる3.8センチ～５センチの雨量が土壌を湿らせポピーの発芽に最適と言われています。

 

これが５センチ以上の雨量ですと逆に水の量が多すぎて発芽出来る種の量が減少してしまいます。

 

また冬の間に降る雨の数も非常に重要です。

 

ポピーが咲き乱れる国立公園内。

 

トータルで約18センチ程の雨量が発芽して綺麗に花が開花するのに必要なのですがこの個々の雨嵐のタイミング

や長さが関係しているのです。

 

過去２０年間では保護区の毎年の雨量が平均で３０センチ、最低が８センチ、最高が６６センチという記録がある

そうです。

 

ポピーが発芽して育ち始める季節として最適なのが１０月後半から１１月初旬。

 

これがポピーの蕾。

 

これよりも早いとまだ残暑が残る気温が高い中で種が渇いて次の雨が降るシーズンまで土壌もカラカラに乾いてしまい、

死んでしまいます。

 

もし雨嵐がこの１０月後半から１１月初旬の時期から遅れると土壌は冷えて根が浅く冬の寒さや春の温度上昇に

耐えられず死んでしまいます。

 

また２月後半から３月時には４月まで続く雨嵐はポーピーが開花のシーズンまで持ちこたえる為に必要で乾き切ると

持ちこたえる事が出来ません。

 

こうした雨の量そして適度に湿った土壌が鮮やかなオレンジ色の花を咲かせます。

 

どれだけ適切な時期に最適の雨の数や雨量が必要かという事を新たに知ったのとこうした自然のサイクルが異常気象で

変わってしまって行っている今の状況を思うと非常に複雑な気持ちになります。

 

できればこの鮮やかなポピーが永遠に咲き続ける事を願うばかりです。

 

そしてこの鮮やかなオレンジのポーピーは満開になった後、土壌が渇いて行くのと一緒にそのオレンジ色が徐々に薄く

なって最後は黄色くなります。

 

私達が行った時は開花直後でまだ満開と迄行かずでした。

 

この様に天候に非常に左右される繊細なポピーは毎年咲く量や咲く場所も違うそうです。

 

なのでもしこの時期に訪れる際にはウェブサイトで開花時期を見てから行ってみて下さいね。

 

ポピー保護区での注意事項　

このポピー保護区に行かれる際に注意しなければならない事が幾つかあります。

注意事項か書かれた看板。

 

絶対に国立公園内のポピー並びに他の植物を摘んで持って帰る事は出来ません。

摘んだのが見つかると罰金が課せられます。

 

遊歩道で写真撮影に夢中でポピーの上に座って写真を撮ってる観光客が。

 

ボランティアの人が注意しても無視。マナーが悪いのにびっくり。

 

その観光客が座った場所に咲いていたポピーがしおれていました　

 

決められた遊歩道から外れて勝手に入ってはいけません。もし入ったのが見つかると罰金が課せられます。

 

入口に大きな看板が出ているにも関わらず全く読んでいないのかずんずん勝手に入ってはいけない場所に行って

しまう家族が。

 

ボランティアの人達が大声で叫んで遊歩道に何とか誘導させていましたがこういうマナー違反の観光客が後を

絶たないんだろうなと胸が痛くなりました。

 

犬を連れて入る事が出来ません 　

 

保護区内では水以外の飲食は出来ません 

毒蛇が出るので注意と書かれた看板があちこちに。

 

そして最後にこの保護区に行く際は朝早く行かれる事をお勧めします。

駐車場への道が渋滞！

 

というのは私達が現地に着いたのが１０時過ぎでその時既に保護区内の駐車場は満杯。

 

駐車場に行く道が渋滞していたので保護区の入口付近に路上駐車して歩く事にしました。

 

戻って来た１１時半過ぎには保護区内の駐車場も勿論の事、路上駐車する場所も無い程の大渋滞になっていました。

 

車に戻って来た時には公園の外の道は大渋滞！

 

さらに路上駐車は基本的に禁止。

 

私達はラッキーでしたが警察が来て駐車違反の切符を切っていたので路上駐車も充分にご注意下さい。

 

なので混まない朝早い時間帯に行く事をお勧めします。

巨大な岩、”Vasquez Rocks” （ヴァスケス・ロック）

さてポピーを鑑賞した後に西海岸に住んでいる人なら誰もが知っている有名な岩があるから見に行こうと

訪れたのがヴァスケス・ロックという場所。

 

こちらが公園の入り口。

 

何故かというと数々のコマーシャル、テレビドラマや映画で使われているからなのです。

 

日本人に馴染みがあるものではスタートレック、オースティン・パワーズやバイオニック・ウーマン（懐かしい！）

というテレビドラマで使われています。

 

場所はアンテロープ・バレー国立公園から車で５０分程の場所。

 

 

こちらが有名なVasquez Rock。

岩にも登れますし周囲にはトレイルも。

 

ヴァスケス・ロックの歴史 

この岩は２５億年前というとてつもない大昔に隆起して出来たと言われています。

 

自然を充分に感じられる場所です。

 

最初にこの地に住み着いたのが南カリフォルニアにいたネイティブインディアンであるタタヴィアム（Tayaviam)

で彼らはTakic Uto-Aztecan（タキック・ウト・アズテカン）という固有の言語を使っていました。

 

その後スペイン人の伝道師達がこの地に入植し始めるとこのネイティブインディアンは彼らの元で働き始め、スペイン語を

話す様になりました。

 

最後の生き残りのタタヴィアムの人が１９１６年に亡くなったそうです。

 

１８７４年に当時有名だった窃盗を繰り返し警察に追われていた 盗賊のボスだった

Tiburicio Vasquez（ティブリシオ・ヴァスケス）がこの岩周辺に隠れて なかなか見つからなかった

という話があります。

 

かなり社交的で女性にもてたという盗賊のボス、ヴァスケス。３９歳という若さで亡くなっています。

 

いつしか人々がこの岩を彼の名前から取ってＶasquez Rock（ヴァスケス・ロック）と呼ぶ様になったそうです。
